Your Health is in Your Hands

The word healthy may have different connotations for different people. For example, if you are young, your health routine mainly consists of hitting the gym to gain muscle or lose fat. But if you’re older, your goals may change and you want to avoid many common old age diseases.  That’s why being healthy cannot really be defined or a prescribed set of rules that you have to follow. But there are things that most experts agree you should have or do to be considered healthy.

Let’s look at the most important aspects of a healthy life. While we don’t have a fixed answer to this question, a good approach is to achieve a balance between physical, mental, and emotional factors. The most important aspects here will be your training, diet, and mindset. The key is to give equal attention to each of them since ignoring one can affect your ability to support the other two.


Training

Let’s start with your training. Being fit doesn’t mean you have to be a top athlete, but it does mean that you stay active in a certain way every day. Pay attention to the following:

Scheduling. It’s best to stick to workouts within the same time frame as your physical activity. Just walking more or taking the stairs instead of the elevator is beneficial. It’s not the activity you’re doing that matters, it’s that you keep your body moving. You can begin a slightly more intense workout, such as weight training, when you’re ready to do so.

Try to stick to your schedule. You don’t have to go to the gym every day. I do strength training twice a week. That’s it. Being healthy is finding something you enjoy doing that fits your lifestyle, and then stick doing it at least a few times a week.


Your diet

The next aspect of good health is your diet. So what you put into your body matters. Many of my clients think that to eat better, they need to go to the nearest health food store and buy what they can find. This healthy eating idea can often overwhelm people and they often think they will spend a lot of money or they have to take away their favorite foods. It’s not true. It’s possible to eat healthy on a budget with foods from your local supermarket. You also don’t have to spend a lot of money on the newly advertised superfood. This is especially important to understand if you are young and living on a budget.


There are countless easy meals you can make with simple, fresh fruits and vegetables and nutrient-rich, accessible lean protein. The good news is that “meal planning” isn’t rocket science, and anyone can follow a healthy diet.


Mental health

The third most important pillar of health is mental health. Many people have the first two aspects covered by a good exercise or eating plan but unfortunately forget that they also need to actively work on their mental health. You have to develop the right mindset to remain motivated. A poor mindset may make you indulge in unhealthy coping mechanisms, such as substance abuse or overeating. It’s not easy because there isn’t a single strategy, but most of my clients have benefited from two things:

  • Reduce stress and promote mental health. There are proven strategies for both. Real stress reduction comes from identifying your main sources of stress and eliminating them or at least managing them so you don’t have to worry about them all day. Improving mental health is about creating healthy habits such as a good night’s sleep that allow you to build positivity.

  • Take time out for yourself to relax. Doing this isn’t easy in our busy times of today, but like with any diet or workout, you can set aside certain times of your day to actively focus on your mental health and try to improve it a little bit every day. Mentally unwinding increases focus and energy and you remain on track.


As you can see, healthy living is really about managing the physical and mental aspects effectively with developing a positive mindset. Let’s realize when your physical health is poor, your mental and emotional health is also affected. Poor mental health affects your physical and emotional health. They are all interrelated. Manage these three aspects and it will definitely pay off.
