Setting Life Goals

You can only get the best in your life if you stay focused on achieving your goals. But before you start working on your goals, you have to decide what you want to do and set goals for yourself. Don’t worry if your goals, at least at the start, seem crazy to other people and to you too. The wild ideas and not the formatted ones are worth reflecting on and achieving.

Life Philosophy

Do you have a life philosophy? Simply stating it’s the way you want to live your life. A Standard Operating Procedure(SOP) or should it be called a User Manual, formulated on the basis of your understanding of the meaning of life, and bringing this meaning to fruition is the philosophy of life for most of us. Having such an SOP is then helpful in setting your life goals.

Let’s analyze an example of life philosophy. It is…

  1. I believe that life is a journey with many ups and downs.

  2. I value honesty and truthfulness in personal and professional development.

  3. I balance my work and personal success.

  4. I help people to find the best in themselves.

  5. I respect life from different perspectives.

  6. I spend time reflecting on myself.

  7. I listen with respect and gratitude to others.

  8. I am thankful for what I have.

An Honest Appreciation

Your life philosophy remains the frame of reference for you to set life goals. You carry out an honest appreciation of your present state of affairs concerning health, career, wealth, family, social status, and happiness. Where do you stand today and what are your priorities? It’s for you to be honest with your assessment before deciding on the area you would like to tackle first. You should be looking for the overall personal development and the consequent change in lifestyles. Where one stands spiritually is likely to have a bearing on the outcome of this appreciation in most cases.

This appreciation is of great help in identifying areas that need modification by discarding certain things. Identification of the overlapping issues is important towards this end. Would, for instance, a job or business goal solve a persistent financial itch and allow you to pursue a long-cherished life style?

Goal Setting

You must have realized by now that you are able to narrow down your hunt. Are you in a position to identify a single goal that once achieved can transform most aspects of your life? Have You? If so, set this as your prime goal.

The Prime Goal

Indeed, such a goal can be time bound – long, medium, or short-term? Important it is, can you take actions now that would move you closer toward it? Working backward, now you set different wayside goals facilitating getting to this prime goal. Setting goals and forgetting about them is common. This singular prime goal serves as a beacon. The problem of “Setting goals and overlooking them” is best avoided.

After Thought

Setting up a proper mechanism for tracking the results of the wayside goals is essential. The sub-sets of these goals are reviewed periodically and mid-course corrections are taken. Every goal achieved strengthened our thought process. A man is an outcome of his thoughts. Eve
