Be Ready to Grab Opportunities: They May Be Closer Than You Think

Opportunity

“If no opportunity presents itself, create one”.

History is full of numerous examples of those who grabbed the opportunity to achieve results that less resolute people thought impossible.   Too often, lack of opportunity is an excuse for inaction. Unfortunately, people don’t try instead they sit and complain while the more focused people, make sure they are ready when the opportunity arises.

Life offers us enormous opportunities, big and small.

When you have the opportunity to take on additional responsibility, it should never be taken lightly. Doing well in a new endeavour may prove to be a stepping stone to a more fulfilling future. We do not get infinite chances to have the things we want. Nothing is worse than missing an opportunity that could have changed the course of your life.

If a slave like Fred Douglass in the 1800s, who didn't even own himself, could learn to read and lift himself to become an admired orator, journalist, and statesman—what would people with the know-how and self-development tools at their disposal do?  Are we not already capable when we compare our present existence with Douglass, who overcame many impossible circumstances?

Indeed many of us always complain that there is no future for us and waste hours every day cribbing and sulking that we deserve much more. But we should know that to be even lucky, preparations have to meet opportunity. Helen Keller, at the age of 19 months, became deaf and blind. But that didn’t stop her. She was the first deaf and blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree.

A willingness to seize opportunities is a valuable mindset to develop because it can lead to personal and professional growth. Here are some benefits if you are willing to take advantage of the opportunities:

  • Increased Responsiveness: Don’t give lame excuses. If no opportunity presents itself, create one. Success is where preparation and opportunity meet. When you actively look for opportunities, you become more responsive to the opportunities around you. With this heightened awareness, you learn to take your chances.

  • Effective networking: By actively seeking and seizing opportunities, you are likely to meet new people and expand your network. Connecting with others can open doors to new opportunities and collaborations that can be beneficial both personally and professionally.

  • Progression in personal and professional life: Willingness to seize opportunities can lead to advancement in various areas of life. Whether it's career opportunities, personal relationships, or personal development, preparation and openness can help you get ahead.

  • Continuous learning and growth: Opportunities often present themselves as opportunities to learn and grow. By taking on new experiences and challenges, you can develop new skills, gain valuable information and broaden your perspectives.

  • Increased Confidence and Resilience: Seizing opportunities and taking action builds confidence and resilience. Every opportunity you take, whether it leads to success or not, provides valuable learning experiences and helps you build resilience in the face of adversity.

  • Achieving your goals and dreams: Opportunities often align with your goals and desires. By being willing to accept them, you increase your chances of making your dreams a reality. Taking action when opportunities arise can bring you closer to achieving what you want.

  • Adaptability and versatility: Adaptability and versatility are necessary to seize opportunities. It allows you to get out of your comfort zone, accept changes and adapt to new circumstances. This flexibility can be valuable in navigating and staying ahead of life's ever-changing landscape.

Remember that being open to options doesn't mean you say yes to every opportunity. It means paying attention, evaluating opportunities based on your values, goals, and skills, and then acting when it aligns with your vision for the future.
