Are We Ready to Learn from AI?

Colonel Prashant Rawal

Above the image, bold black text reads, "Are we ready to learn from AI?" The backdrop features warm tones with orange and yellow diagonal stripes on the right.

In the world we inhabit today, artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer a distant dream or a figment of science fiction. It is here, living among us, quietly reshaping industries, solving complex problems, and challenging the way we view intelligence, learning, and growth. But let’s get to the heart of the matter: what can AI teach us about self-improvement?

I agree that AI is inhumane in many ways. It can correct, cajole, confront, and even criticize itself, relentlessly striving to produce a better version. Can we, as humans, claim the same capacity for brutal self-honesty and continuous growth? Are we ready to learn the lessons AI subtly offers us?

The Courage to Critique Ourselves

Imagine an AI model. It takes input, processes it, identifies errors, and makes adjustments without hesitation. If an output is flawed, it doesn’t hide behind pride or fear of failure. It confronts the imperfection head-on and works tirelessly to improve. Now compare that to human nature. How often do we falter at the first hint of criticism, retreating into defensiveness or self-doubt?

Think about a time when you received constructive feedback. Did you embrace it as an opportunity to grow, or did it sting like a personal attack? The truth is, that many of us struggle to critique ourselves or invite others to do so. Yet, self-reflection and constructive criticism are the cornerstones of growth.

Lesson 1: Embrace criticism. View it as data, not a personal indictment. Ask yourself, “What can I learn from this?” instead of recoiling in discomfort.

The Art of Iteration

AI thrives on iteration. A program is never truly “done”; it’s constantly updated, refined, and enhanced. Imagine if we approached our personal growth the same way. Too often, we believe in the illusion of a finish line—a point where we are “good enough.” But what if we adopted an iterative mindset, constantly seeking to improve?

Consider a writer honing their craft. They write a draft, edit it, rewrite it, and then edit it again. Each version is better than the last. Now, consider how we approach our relationships, careers, or habits. How often do we review and refine, versus simply settling for the status quo?

Lesson 2: Treat life like a series of drafts. Continuously revise and improve. Celebrate progress, not perfection.

The Power of Confrontation

AI does not shy away from its mistakes. It confronts them—head-on and without excuses. As humans, however, confrontation often feels uncomfortable. Whether it’s facing a personal shortcoming, an unresolved conflict, or a difficult truth, we tend to avoid rather than engage.

Take, for example, someone struggling with a bad habit. A smoker might rationalise their behaviour, saying, “It’s only one cigarette,” instead of confronting the root cause. Imagine if they approached the problem like an AI would: identifying the issue, analysing triggers, and systematically addressing them.

Lesson 3: Stop avoiding hard truths. Confront them with courage and curiosity. Ask, “What needs to change, and how can I make it happen?”

The Gift of Self-Improvement

Here’s where AI leaves us in awe. It criticizes itself. It learns from its mistakes and uses those lessons to create a better version of itself. Imagine if humans adopted this mindset. Instead of hiding from our flaws, we could examine them with clarity and work towards growth.

Think about athletes. The best performers watch recordings of their games, dissecting every move to find areas of improvement. They understand that self-criticism is not an act of self-sabotage but a pathway to excellence.

Lesson 4: Practise self-compassionate self-criticism. Use your flaws as stepping stones, not stumbling blocks.

Are We Ready?

The real question is not whether AI can teach us to improve; it’s whether we’re ready to learn. Are we prepared to set aside our egos, confront our imperfections, and strive for better versions of ourselves? It’s a challenge, no doubt. But the rewards—growth, resilience, and a deeper connection to our potential—are worth every effort.

An Action Plan for Lifelong Growth

  1. Regular Reflection: Set aside time each week to reflect on your actions, decisions, and outcomes. Ask, “What went well? What didn’t? What can I do differently?”

  2. Seek Feedback: Actively invite feedback from trusted sources. Approach it with an open mind and a desire to learn.

  3. Iterate Continuously: Treat your goals and habits as works in progress. Make small, incremental changes and track your improvement.

  4. Confront Honestly: Identify one area of your life that needs change. Write down the obstacles and create a plan to address them head-on.

  5. Celebrate Growth: Acknowledge and reward yourself for improvements, no matter how small. Growth is a journey, not a destination.

Final Thoughts

AI may be inhuman, but in its relentless pursuit of improvement, it holds up a mirror to our own potential. If we dare to look closely, we’ll see that the lessons are clear: embrace criticism, confront challenges, iterate constantly, and never stop growing. The question is not can we learn? But will we?

The time to act is now. Let’s take a page from AI’s playbook and embark on our own journey of relentless self-improvement. Are you ready?
